“The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”
George Bernard Shaw
A lot of what we post on social media is automatic; for example we post to increase a streak or to increase our number of likes or followers. We allow apps to hijack our brain’s dopamine circuit, and hence our reward-motivated behaviour, and waste the short amount of time we have fulfilling the advertising needs of large corporations. By becoming aware of these motivations at the experiential level, e.g. by taking a deep breath before we post, we can take charge of what was previously automatic in us.
